Creative Block

I always hear of people talking about having a Creative Block( or writers block ) but never had one myself up till now. Anything I do just doesn't seem to work as good as it should and I'm genuinely just not feeling whatever I produce.

Anyone got any neat tricks to get back into the swing of things? Nothing worse than trying to be productive and ending up just wasting time.

  1. Whenever I get any sort of creative block I just try and take a step back, staying away from any intense efforts to try and rekindle creativity. I'll listen to some completely unrelated or inspiring music, read a book, go for a walk or just get on with life for a bit. Forgetting about it can be half the battle with me. Something'll then come to my head when I'm about doing stuff and it'll get me fired up to try whatever I'm doing creatively.

  2. Don't worry about it and write something in a different style to what you normally do. Make a track that entirely consists of samples maybe?

  3. I seem to have been going through this in terms of production for almost a year now. Try something else - draw a picture, read a book - just take your mind off it for a while. The time will come.

  4. I agree with taking a step back. I tend to revisit old records, brush up on an instrument/vst or generally take care of any shit that ive been putting off like cleaning the house or uni assignments.

  6. Creative block, may not actually be a block at all, merely the better recognition of the quality of your work.

Think on that for a second.

  7. i usually smoke some crack. or just take a break, listen to other tunes and go to a few nights. i usually find after a night of boogying down to some funky beats i get loads of inspiration and ideas and get the urge to produce again

  9. Whenever I have a creative block I try and live a little (you know, emerge from the smokey haze that is my bedroom studio and shock horror, talk to people; even go outside!).

I find a lot of my inspiration comes from places I've been, things I've done, people I know etc so taking a break from the whole tune writing thing and immersing myself in what inspires me helps.
